I've become enchanted with the writing form known as 55-word fiction, or, as coined by Andy Looney, Nanofiction. The basic rules are that the story must contain a plot, at least one character, conflict, and resolution. It must not be longer than 55 words (hypenated words count as two). The title does not get counted into the word count, but it cannot be longer than seven words long.

So as I said, I'm enchanted with the form. It's a true challenge for a writer, and I hope to be adding them here as I write them. Right now, I've completed one.

Northeast Direct,
Thanksgiving Weekend

The three-hour delay ended
when the train pulled out
of Wilmington and the girl
finally found a seat. The
conspiracy theorist next to her
regaled her with tales of
the government's cover-ups. From
aliens to space fortresses to
Florida voting ballots, the man
would not be quiet. Thank
god he got off in Philly.
